Brigham Young University-Idaho President Kim B. Clark will share
some of his knowledge and expertise when he speaks on “Design
Rules: The Power of Modularity” at the University Forum on
Thursday, September 15.
President Clark, former dean of the Harvard Business School, has
done extensive research focusing on modularity in design and the
integration of technology. He has also studied in depth the
competition in industry evolution, with a particular focus on
the computer industry. He and Carliss Baldwin are co-authors a
book entitled Design Rules: The Power of Modularity (MIT Press,
2000). This information will be the main focus of his teaching
at the Forum.
Some of President Clark’s earlier research focused on the areas
of technology, productivity, product development and operations
strategy. His publications on these topics include Leading
Product Development: The Senior Manager’s Guide to Creating and
Shaping the Enterprise (with S.C. Wheelwright, Free Press,
1995), The Perpetual Enterprise Machine: Seven Keys to Corporate
Renewal through Successful Product and Process Development
(co-edited with H.K. Bowen et. Al., Oxford, 1994), and
Revolutionizing Product Development (with S.C. Wheelwright, Free
Press, 1992). He has also written articles on development
projects, development teams, and product integrity.
President Clark received bachelor’s (1974), master’s (1977), and
doctoral (1978) degrees in economics from Harvard University. He
joined the Harvard faculty in 1978, serving as the dean of the
of the Harvard Business School from 1995 to 2005.
The University Forum will begin at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Chapel.
A question and answer session at 3 p.m. will follow President
Clark’s address. The Forum will be broadcast live on KBYI 100.5
