BYU-Idaho’s
Vocal Union and Sound Alliance, the university’s jazz choir and jazz band,
will perform in a combined concert Friday, Nov. 15, in the Kirkham
Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets
are $1 for BYU-Idaho students and $2 for the general public and are
available at the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office. For more information, call
496-2230.
“The
two groups combined create a fascinating evening of everything from
swing-era tunes to modern jazz – it’s a very upbeat, entertaining concert,”
says Kevin Brower, who directs
Vocal Union with his wife, Nori.
“We’re
working hard to add entertainment to the educational factor in producing
high-quality jazz music,” says Mark Watkins, director of Sound Alliance.
“Jazz is one of the only true original American art forms. It’s important
to cultivate that art, but there’s no reason we can’t entertain alongside
that.”
The
groups will perform both separately and combined in numbers such as “Don’t
Get Around Much Anymore,” “Get on Your Feet,” “How High the Moon,” “Lush
Life,” “The Mad Grasshopper,” “Orange-Colored Sky,” “Sing, Sing, Sing” and
“Tenor Madness.”
Both
Vocal Union and Sound Alliance are auditioned academic groups in the music
department and meet regularly in class. Vocal Union performs approximately
10 to 12 times per semester, both on and off campus. Sound Alliance
performs two to three times each semester. The Nov. 15 concerts is one of
the rare occasions the two groups perform together.
Vocal
Union and Sound Alliance will perform during an extended tour in May
throughout Montana, Alberta and British Columbia. # # #
