University, Women’s Glee

Choirs to perform together

The University and Women’s Glee choirs will perform in their first combined concert of the semester Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrus Concert Hall of the Snow Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets are $1 for BYU-Idaho students and $2 for the general public and are available at the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office. Call 496-2230 for more information.

The 180-member University Choir, conducted by Randall Kempton of the music department faculty, will perform selections from Handel’s “Messiah” and some folk pieces from Brazil, Ireland and the United States. Two students, Kim Darrington and Laura Turley, will assist with the conducting.

The 39-member Women’s Glee Choir, conducted by Marybeth Jones of the music department faculty, will perform a variety of pieces, including some pop music, hymns and other spiritual music, and seasonal pieces such as “A Joyful Madrigal,” in which the choir creates bell-like sounds, and “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming,” a traditional Christmas carol whose melody dates to 1599.  The choir will perform both with accompaniment and a cappella.

“I consider it an opportunity to give girls an education not in just singing, but in singing various styles so that they become acquainted with more than one area,” Jones said. “If we did all one style, it would be one-sided. I like to have some sacred music and some fun stuff to make it lighter.”

Additionally, the two choirs will perform Dec.12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrus Concert Hall in a combined concert and Dec. 15 in a community “Sing-in” of Handel’s “Messiah.” The latter performance will be in conjunction with the orchestra and will provide an opportunity for more audience participation than in past years, Jones said.
