REXBURG, Idaho — Brigham Young University-Idaho students
will have the chance to participate in a myriad of service activities on
campus and in the community during the 10th annual Service Week Oct. 7-12..
In combining traditional
activities such as a blood drive with new activities such as a kickoff
meeting with President and Sister Bednar and a mural painting at a local
school, many campus organizations beyond the Leadership and Service
Institute — including Associated Women Students and the Married Student
Association — have committed time and manpower.
“We like to get students
involved through service so they know where they can go to serve,” says
Wayne Henrie, assistant director of the service institute and a sophomore
from Calgary, Alberta. “That gives them a wide spectrum of what is
available.”
While the Leadership and
Service Institute sponsors service activities throughout the year, Henrie
says it is still important to have a designated, distinct service week.
“We hope to make people aware
of the many needs that are out there, to get a good pool of students to be
service-minded not just throughout the week but throughout their
lifetimes,” he said. “Service Week gets people excited and helps them see
what a difference their service makes.”
The week’s activities will
begin with BYU-Idaho President David A. Bednar and his wife, Susan,
speaking on the effects of service in their lives and its part in the
university’s mission at a kickoff meeting Monday, Oct. 7, at 5 p.m. in the
Taylor Quad area. A torchlighting will immediately follow.
On Tuesday, Oct. 8, students
will participate in a humanitarian service project making quilts for
infants. The project will take place from 4-6 p.m. in the Manwaring Center
East Ballroom.
A Red Cross Blood Drive, held
on campus four times a year, will be Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to
5 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Manwaring East Ballroom.
Those wanting to donate may sign up at the Manwaring Center information
desk.
Also on Wednesday is the Senior
Ball from 7-8 p.m. at the Teton House, where many of the community’s older
residents live. The dress is formal.
On Thursday, the Happy Factory, which paints toy cars for
children all over the world, will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. across from the
Bookstore in the Manwaring Center.
BYU-Idaho students will team up
with Madison Middle School students in a mural painting at the middle
school at 5 p.m. Friday.
Serving with Smiles will
sponsor a service project Saturday cleaning up the sand dunes and a civil
defense cave. Participants should meet in MC 272 at 9 a.m. that morning.
Collection boxes for
non-perishable food items and clothing will be set up at both the
intramural all-star flag football games in the Viking Stadium Friday night
and at the Battle of the Dance Saturday night. The items will be donated to
needy families in the area.
Henrie says he hopes to involve
all students at the university in the week’s activities.
“Our goal is to touch every
student, whether through giving or receiving, and help them know where they
can go to serve and improve themselves through service,” he says.
