Richard Dutcher, a writer, producer, director and actor
best known for his work in the movies God’s Army and Brigham City,
will speak on the art of filmmaking at the BYU-Idaho University Forum
Thursday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Chapel. The forum will also be
carried live on KBYU, 100.5 FM.
He
will conduct a question-and-answer session in Taylor Room 120 immediately
following the forum.
Dutcher’s
God’s Army, a feature film released in 2000 about Mormon
missionaries (produced on a budget of $300,000) received national critical
acclaim and earned $2.6 million at the box office.
His
next film, Brigham City, examined human behavior under pressure in a
small, Mormon town. The New York Times described this murder mystery
as “engrossing . . . concise, [and] skillful.” Scott Foundas of Variety
called it “the best film . . . for the discussion of serious faith-related
issues [in] over a decade.”
Dutcher
graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 1988 with a
bachelor’s degree in film. While at BYU, he received the university’s
“Producer’s Award,” the highest recognition for a student film. His first
full-length screenplay, Romantic Notions, was a semi-finalist in the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science’s 1992 Nicholl competition. In
1997, he directed Eliza and I, a film adaptation of a one-woman play
depicting the life of Eliza R. Snow.
