BYU-Idaho piano ensemble to perform

“Double Piano, Double Fun!” is the theme of the free piano concert to be given by BYU-Idaho piano teacher Steve Allen’s piano ensemble classes Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrus Concert Hall of the Snow Center for the Performing Arts at BYU-Idaho.

The concert will feature students playing a variety of music, ranging from “Cannon in D” to “Put on a Happy Face.”

Students each have a partner they have been rehearsing with. Some duos play on the same piano, some play on separate pianos.

“It’s like piano in surround sound,” Allen says. “I think people who come to this concert will be amazed at the sound effects.”

It has taken a lot of practice to get to the point of playing together. In order to be successful in this task, the students must practice listening to each other. Much of their class time is spent listening for balance and tone. The duos have the duty of reading their own music, listening to their partner play and watching their partner in order to stay together and keep the same time.

Preparations for the upcoming concert started nearly four weeks ago when the students chose their partners and the pieces they would play.

The concert will also count for FA 100 credit for BYU-Idaho students. # # #
