Del Parkinson to perform

romantic period music

REXBURG, Idaho -- Pianist Del Parkinson will perform Friday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrus Concert Hall of the Snow Center for the Performing Arts at Brigham Young University-Idaho.

The concert is free; no tickets are required.

The concert, called  A Romantic Vision,” will feature Beethoven’s 32 Variations in C Minor, which is based on an original theme that Beethoven wrote; Chopin’s 24 Preludes, which include one in every major key and every minor key; and Liszt’s Dante Sonata, based on Dante’s Inferno.

“Each of these romantic-style composers has created something new that looks forward  in music,” he said.

Parkinson, who was a faculty member at Ricks College from 1977-1985, has returned to BYU-Idaho every fall since then to perform.

“I loved teaching there; it’s a great school and there’s just a strong emphasis on music,” he said. “The whole campus and community just seem to enjoy music. It’s nice to perform somewhere where it’s really appreciated.”

He was last on campus for Education Week in June. He will return to campus again to perform as a soloist with the BYU-Idaho Halloween Concert in October when he will play Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

Parkinson is a native of Blackfoot and began his study of the piano at age 5. He served as coordinator of piano instruction at Ricks College for several years and presently is a professor of piano at Boise State University.

He holds a doctor of music degree from Indiana University and a postgraduate diploma from the Julliard School and has performed in Europe, Asia, Mexico and throughout the United States.
