Former Ricks coach to oversee physical

area of Activities Program

REXBURG, IdahoFormer Ricks College women’s basketball coach Lori Woodland has been named an administrator in the new Activities Program at Brigham Young University-Idaho in Rexburg.

Activities Program Director Devin Shaum announced Monday that Woodland will oversee the Physical Area, which includes fitness, outdoor activities and sports for the approximately 10,000 students on campus.

Having taught part time in the religion department since 1994, Woodland had planned to teach religion full time beginning in the fall.

“Right now I’m still in shock and a little overwhelmed,” she said. “But I’m excited about the program and know it’s a divinely inspired program.”

The Physical Area is one of four components of the Activities Program that also includes  Arts, Enrichment and Social areas. Directors of these areas are James Brague, Arts; Jesse Brown, Social; and Kris Fillmore, Enrichment.

In 14 seasons, Woodland’s Lady Vikings won 307 and lost 120 games, a winning percentage of 72. She is the only basketball coach in the history of the college to record more than 300 career wins and she was voted the Region 18 Coach of the Year five different times.

She was born and raised in Winnemucca, Nev., where she graduated from Lowry High School in 1970. After graduation she entered school at the University of Nevada-Reno where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1975. While at UNR, she played basketball for the Lady Wolf Pack for four years and volleyball and softball as a freshman. She returned to Winnemucca after her graduation to coach basketball and teach physical education at her alma mater. In five seasons as Lowry's head coach, her teams posted a 65-15 overall record and won two state championships. She was voted Nevada A Coach of the Year twice.

In 1980, she received her master’s degree in physical education from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. From there she went on to coach and assume sports information duties at the College of Eastern Utah in Price. She also was sports information director at Ricks College from 1989-97. She and her husband Richard live in Rexburg. # # #
