Ricks reunions, alumni concert major

part of homecoming weekend

The 2002 BYU-Idaho homecoming celebration, “Faith in the Future,” will spotlight the Ricks College classes of 1942, 1952, 1962, 1972, 1982 and 1992 as part of its general alumni celebrations.

Members of the class of 1952, who reach emeritus status this year, may attend their first emeritus breakfast held Saturday morning at 7 a.m. in the Manwaring Center West Ballroom. BYU-Idaho President David A. Bednar will speak to the group, which includes retirees and alumni who graduated at least 50 years ago. Several emeritus members will also receive recognition at the event.

“I hope that the alumni will come back and realize that . . . even though the campus looks different, the spirit, the oneness, the quality, is still here,” Steve Davis, alumni director, said.

In addition, alumni members of the A Cappella Choir, Concert Chorale and Collegiate Singers have been invited to perform in a special concert with current members of BYU-Idaho choirs Saturday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrus Concert Hall. Free tickets, required for the event, are available at the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office.

Co-sponsored by the Alumni Association and the BYU-Idaho music department, pieces will performed by the Men’s Choir, Women’s Choir, University Choir, Women’s Glee, Collegiate Singers, Vocal Union and the alumni group.

“It will be a sampling of the choirs in a festive way featuring our repertoire, to show what we’ve become over the last hundred years. It will be a nice opportunity for our alumni to see what’s been going on since they’ve been away,” said Kevin Brower, who conducts the Collegiate Singers.

He added, “For the alumni themselves, they’ll see what they began, what they were involved with decades ago, has become. They’ll see that the dream is coming true. Second, and maybe even more important, is for our own students here to see is that what they have is built on a foundation from people who came before us. The blessings we enjoy are in direct relation to people who have contributed in time and money and other aspects. We enjoy that richness as faculty and students. This will provide them the opportunity for the students to rub shoulders with the alumni, to realize that what we have today is because of them.”
