BYU-Idaho’s first summer graduation

to feature address by Church leader

REXBURG, Idaho--Elder David B. Haight of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be the commencement speaker at summer graduation on Friday, August 23, at 10 a.m. in the Taylor Chapel.

A total of 495 graduates will receive degrees following the summer term that ends Aug. 22.

While most graduates will receive associate degrees, 21 of the graduates will receive bachelor’s degrees as they finish requirements of the new baccalaurate programs that began in 2001. Thirteen students will receive bachelor’s degrees in nursing, three in interior design, three in recreation leadership, one in English and one in history education.

This will be the university’s first summer graduation. Last summer’s graduation, which was held in June, was still under the name Ricks College because it occurred before the official name change Aug. 10.

The day will begin with a free graduation breakfast for all summer graduates from 7:30-9 a.m. in the Manwaring Center. Cost for friends and family is $5.

Elder Haight, who will turn 96 in September, has been a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since January 8, 1976. He had served as an assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve since April 6, 1970.

In addition to his regular assignment as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, Elder Haight is a member of the Correlation Committee, Human Resource Committee, Strengthening Church Members Committee, and a member of the Church Board of Education and boards of trustees of Brigham Young University, BYU-Hawaii, BYU-Idaho, and LDS Business College.       After attending Oakley High School and Albion State Normal School in Idaho, Elder Haight completed his schooling at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. In 1978 he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Utah State University for his service to the university. On July 11, 1991, the David B. Haight Alumni Center was dedicated on the USU campus by Howard W. Hunter, then president of the Church. He received an honorary doctorate degree from BYU in August 1998.

He married Ruby Olson of Salt Lake City September 4, 1930, in the Salt Lake Temple.  They are parents of three children, 18 grandchildren and 73 great-grandchildren.
