new faculty members come to BYU-Idaho
REXBURG, Idaho—Beginning
its second year as a four-year university, Brigham Young University-Idaho has
hired 30 new faculty members.
Some
of the new faculty are coming as a result of the
growing university and some as a result of normal attrition due to
retirements.
Fifteen
faculty members have or will retire this year: Wade Anderson (physical education),
Irma Anderson (business management), Marilyn Anderson (information systems),
Wilson Brown (music), David Butler (library), Mel Griffeth
(biology), Bernie Jensen (religion), Tom Liau
(library), Lanae Morgan (information systems), Bob
Nelson (theatre), Gale Reeser (library), Joe Romney
(religion), Larry Scott (information systems), Lynn Stewart (animal science)
and George Stone (chemistry).
The
following are the new faculty members who are beginning at BYU-Idaho in the
fall:
Richard
B. Adair of Sugar City,
formerly the superintendent in the Sugar-Salem
School District, will teach
secondary education. Born and raised in California,
he received his master’s in education from Brigham
Young University
in Provo, Utah.
He is married with six children.
Gary
A. Ames of Bloomington, Ill.
will teach accounting. Ames was
born in Utah and raised in Arizona,
he received his Ph.D. from the University
of Georgia. He is married and has
nine children.
Rex
Bargee of Logan, Utah,
will teach information systems. He was born in Ohio
and raised in Oregon, Alaska
and Idaho. He received his M.S.
from BYU in Provo, Utah.
He is married with three children.
David
Belka of Riverton, Utah,
will teach art. He was born and raised in Utah
and received his M.A. from BYU in Provo, Utah.
He is married and has one child.
Monte
Belknap of Macomb, Ill., will teach music. Born in Oklahoma
and raised in Arizona, Belknap
is a doctoral candidate in music at the University
of Cincinnati College-Conservatory
of Music. He is married and has seven children.
Michael
C. Cannon, who is coming to BYU-Idaho from serving as the president of the
Kentucky Louisville Mission, will teach in the communications department. He
was born in Maine and raised in
New Jersey and Utah.
He received his M.S. degree from the University
of Oregon. He is married with
four children.
Samuel
L. Clay II of Mesa, Ariz.,
will teach psychology. Born and raised in Arizona,
he received his Ph.D. from BYU in Provo, Utah.
He is married with four children.
Robert
L. Colvin of Sioux Falls, S.D.,
will be teaching Spanish in the foreign language department. Born in Oregon
and raised in Arizona and California,
Colvin received his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt
University. He is married with
three children.
Lary N. Duque’ of Woodland,
Calif., will teach elementary education.
He was born in the Philippines
but as a military child, lived in many places growing up. He immigrated to
the United States
in 1960. He received his Ph.D. from University of California-Davis. An avid
tennis player, Duque’ owned and operated a
tennis academy for 20 years. He is married with four children.
Christopher
Fox of Culver City, Calif.,
will work in library cataloging. Born in Colorado
and raised in California, he
earned a master’s degree in librarianship at the University
of Washington. He is married with
four children.
Christine
Geddes of Rexburg will move from a part-time to
full-time position. She will teach French in the foreign language department.
Born in Utah and raised there and
California, she received her
M.A. from BYU in Provo, Utah.
She is married with four children.
Richard
Hatt of Talent, Ore.,
will teach physics. Born and raised in Utah,
he received his Ph.D. from BYU in Provo, Utah.
He is married and has one child.
Ramona
Higley of Weston, Idaho,
is on a two-year appointment teaching sociology. Born and raised in Idaho,
she is working on her Ph.D. from Utah
State University.
She is married and has five children.
Alan
R. Holyoak of Manchester,
Ind., will teach biology. He was born in Utah
and raised in Louisiana, Kansas
and Canada.
He received his Ph.D. from the University of California-Santa Cruz. He is
married and has four children.
Shawn
P. Johansen of Frostburg, Md.,
will teach history. He was born and raised in Utah
and received his Ph.D. from BYU in Provo, Utah.
He is married and has four children.
Ronald
V. Jones of Fort Collins, Colo.,
will teach computer engineering/technology. He was born in Utah
and raised in Utah and California.
He received his M.S. from Colorado State
University. He has worked for
Hewlett-Packard for 21 years, is married and has four children.
JoAnne W. Kay of Tetonia,
Idaho, will teach elementary education.
She has worked her previously, but will become a full-time faculty member. She
was born in Montana and raised
there and Idaho. She has taught
elementary school for 15 years, was the National
Geographic Teacher Consultant and is anticipating her M.S. at the end of
August 2002 from the University of Idaho.
She is married with four children.
Ralph
M. Kern of Nampa, Idaho,
will teach secondary education. He was raised in Idaho
Falls and is working on his Ph.D. from the University
of Idaho in education leadership.
He has worked as a product development chemist, has owned a cosmetic manufacturing
company, has taught high school chemistry and math and has worked as a high
school principal in Nampa. He is
married with four children.
Bruce
C. Kusch of San Jose,
Calif, will
teach business management. He was born and raised in California
and received his MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management. He is married
with four children.
James
B. Lamb of Belle, Fourche,
S.D., will teach animal science. He was
born and raised in Utah and
received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is married
with three children.
Brian
J. Lemon of Brigham City, Utah,
will teach chemistry. He was born and raised in Utah
and will receive his Ph.D. from Utah
State University.
He is married and has three children.
Laura
L. Lowe of Logan, Utah,
is on a one-year appointment in the economics department. She received her
MBA from Utah State
University.
Bryce
Mecham of Salt Lake City will teach music. He was born in California
and raised in Idaho. He earned
his master’s in music from Northwestern
University. He is married and has
four children.
Roger
Merrill, who has taught as an adjunct faculty member, will become full time
in the theatre department. He has worked with the Playmill
Theater in West Yellowstone, Mont., for 19 seasons. He was born and raised in
Idaho and received his M.A.
from Idaho State
University. He is married and has
four children.
Richard
Neff of Salt Lake City will teach
computer science. Born and raised in Salt Lake City,
he received his Ph.D. from the University
of Utah. He has sung with the Saltaires Show Chorus, being in the top ten International
Championships five times. He is married and has two children.
Steve
Rigby of Mendon, Utah,
will teach information systems. Born and raised in Idaho,
Rigby received his MBA from Utah State
University. He is married and has
three children.
Kevin
B. Smith of Provo, Utah,
will teach computer engineering/technology. Born and raised in Southern
California, he received his Ph.D. from Ohio
State University.
He is married and has six children.
Kyle
R. Walker of Orem, Utah,
will work in the Counseling Center.
Walker was born in Washington
and raised in Nevada and Oregon.
He earned his Ph.D. from BYU in Provo, Utah.
He holds the Nevada state
record of points in a basketball game (48). He is married and has three
children.
C.
Wynn Wilkes of Cedar Hills, Utah,
will teach religion. Born in California
and raised in southeastern Idaho,
he also taught at the Language Training Mission while it was at Ricks
College and has taught for Church
Educational System for the last 25 years. He received his doctorate in education from
Utah State
University and is married with 13
children.
Chris
M. Wilson of Chicago will teach
secondary education. Wilson was born and raised in Utah, he received his master’s
in education from BYU and is married with two children.
