Music performance events to culminate semester’s end

 

 

            In the last weeks of the semester, BYU-Idaho music ensembles will perform Christmas and other music in several events.

            Tickets for all events are available at the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office or at www.byui.edu/tickets. For more information, call 496-2230.

            The following performances will be given:

            Tuesday, Dec. 10: Chamber Winds, Brass Quintet, Horn Ensemble and Trombone Ensemble concert, 5:30 p.m., Snow Recital Hall; no ticket required. Kendell Nielsen will conduct the Chamber Winds and Horn Ensemble and Bryce Mecham will conduct the Brass Quintet and Trombone Ensemble as the groups perform Christmas selections as well as other chamber music.

            Thursday, Dec. 12: Women’s Glee/University Choir concert, 7:30 p.m., Barrus Concert Hall; $1 for students and $2 for general public. The Women’s Glee, conducted by Marybeth Jones, will perform seasonal Christmas favorites. The University Choir, conducted by Randall Kempton, will sing selections from Messiah.

            Friday, Dec. 13: Sound Alliance Cool Yule Concert, 7:30 p.m., Snow Drama Theater; $1 for students and $2 for the general public. Sound Alliance, BYU-Idaho’s jazz band, is conducted by Mark Watkins. The group will play arrangements originally played by Stan Kenton, Glen Miller and others.

            “We found a great version of the ‘Little Drummer Boy’ that, of course, features our drummer. We have a jazz shuffle version of ‘Frosty the Snow Man’ and we have ‘Christmas Time Is Here’ from Charlie Brown's Christmas Special. Missy Babcock of Rexburg will also perform.

            Saturday, Dec. 14: Concert Chorale/Chamber Orchestra Concert, 7:30 p.m., Barrus Concert Hall; $1 for students and $2 for the general public. The groups will be conducted by Eda Ashby and Ted Ashton.

            The orchestra will be performing several works alone, followed by the 30-minute Mozart “Solemn Vespers of the Confessor” in combination with the choir and student soloists. The Concert Chorale will also join in the Mozart piece.

            Sunday, Dec. 15: Handels’ Messiah Sing-In, 7 p.m., Kirkham Auditorium; free ticket required. This performance will involve the audience as they sing several Messiah choruses with the University Choir and Women’s Glee, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra. Although some music will be available for the evening, participants are encouraged to bring their own copies of the score.

            A rehearsal for those who would like to practice prior to the event will be held Dec. 13 at 7:40 p.m. in the Rexburg Tabernacle Civic Center in downtown Rexburg.
