New BYU-Idaho student officers elected

REXBURG, Idaho – New student body officers have been elected at Brigham Young University-Idaho for the upcoming winter semester starting Jan. 6.

Elijah Watkins, a Rexburg native, was elected president; Tierra Belle Finicum of Provo, Utah, vice president; and John Hulbert of Parma, Idaho, secretary.

Watkins, a senior majoring in organizational communication, plans to draw on the students around him for support in his new position.

“As we prepare to organize various committees and councils, I look forward to the resources from which I will have to draw from, comprised of so many students’ talents,” he said. “A great president, or any leader for that matter, does not stand simply on their own two feet. Rather they represent the dedication, talents and knowledge of so many committees which he are she represents. In other words, the president is simply the mouth piece of many highly talented behind-the-scenes people.”

Finicum, a sophomore majoring in sociology, has been on the Activities Council as the leadership director for the fall semester, and said she is excited for the chance to move in to this new role.

“Leadership has given my voice a vehicle to make changes in the world when I do not agree with the way something is being done,” she said. “In the past I sat in the shadows with my arms and mind idle; now I cannot sit still when I have been taught the skills to empower change.”

Hulbert is a junior majoring in English.
