REXBURG,
Idaho – Students,
employees and the general public are reminded that the first devotional of
the winter semester at Brigham Young University-Idaho will be held Tuesday,
Jan. 6, at 2 p.m.
It
is unusual to hold the first devotional on the first day of class, says
Advancement Vice President Garth Hall.
The
speakers will be BYU-Idaho President David A. Bednar
and his wife, Susan.
Devotionals
are held each Tuesday afternoon in the Hart Auditorium and broadcast to overflow
locations in the Taylor Chapel, Hinckley Chapel, Kirkham
Auditorium and the Manwaring
Center. Devotionals also are
broadcast on KBYI-FM 100.5 at 2 and 9 p.m.
While
not all the speakers have been
announced, the devotional schedule is as follows: Jan. 13, Elder David E.
Sorensen of the Presidency of the Seventy; Jan. 20, Michael R. Orme, associate general counsel; Feb. 10, Elder L. Aldin Porter, emeritus member of the First Quorum of
the Seventy; Feb. 17, Elder Richard D. Allred,
former member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy; March 2, Virginia
Pearce, former member of the General Young Women’s Presidency; March
16, Sheri L. Dew, former member of the General Relief Society Presidency;
March 23, Elder Donald L. Staheli, member of the
Second Quorum of the Seventy; March 30, Elder William H. Bradford, emeritus
member of the First Quorum of the Seventy; and April 13, Rod Keller, dean
of the college of language and letters at BYU-Idaho.
Hall
says, “Devotionals are a focus of what we are all about here, and
that’s to provide a learning environment where we can learn by the
spirit.
He
adds, “It’s the highlight of every week for me. It’s an
hour when we can get away from other things and focus on the doctrines of
the gospel.”
Students
attending the devotionals should comply to the devotional etiquette, which
includes the following: dress appropriately for the occasion, remove hats,
arrive early or on time, do not bring or use laser pointers at any
BYU-Idaho assembly or gathering, save only one extra seat and only until
five minutes before the hour, refrain from talking, turn off cell phones
and pagers, help promote a spiritual environment, no food or drink, refrain
from applause, refrain from doing anything that would disturb the
concentration of others or detract from the spirit of the meeting and
remain seated until the closing prayer has been said.
