BYU-Idaho’s
Vocal Union and Sound Alliance, the university’s jazz choir and jazz band,
will perform in a combined concert Friday, Nov. 7,
in the Kirkham Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets
are $2 for the public and $1 for current BYU-Idaho students and can be
purchased by calling the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office at 496-2230 or online at
www.byui.edu/tickets.
Sound
Alliance will be playing a
variety of music from each of the major jazz eras, featuring a variety of
tempos and styles. Several Vocal Union members will also perform alongside
Sound Alliance in several of their numbers.
“It’s
really an exciting and entertaining concert with a lot of high quality
music. It’s on a high artistic level but it’s very
accessible,” said Mark Watkins, Sound Alliance director.
Vocal
Union will perform a number of jazz pieces including
“Mas che
nada,” “Baroque Samba,” “A Cappella in Acapulco”
and “My Romance.”
“This
amazing music style is one of the few styles that finds
it roots in the American experience and tradition. It has been called the
only truly American art form,” said Vocal Union director Kevin
Brower.
The
auditioned academic groups meet regularly in class and finished a highly
successful tour in May, playing for more than 7,200 people in a number of
different venues in western Canada.
“The
tour went really well. The audiences were very receptive and we had
standing ovations everywhere we went,” said Watkins.
