REXBURG,
Idaho - Swingset,
the BYU-Idaho faculty jazz ensemble, will perform Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Snow Drama Theater.
Tickets
are $4 for the general public and $1 for currently enrolled BYU-Idaho
students. They can be purchased at the ticket office in the Manwaring Center,
by calling the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office at 496-2230, by visiting the ticket
office website at www.byui.edu/tickets or at the door.
Thursday’s
concert will include various forms of jazz from B-bop to straight jazz, and
will feature original works and various other arrangements by members in
the group.
This
fall the group features the new addition of Denson Angulo,
a new faculty member who will play bass with the group.
The
faculty performers also include director Mark Watkins (alto and soprano
saxophones), Bryce Mecham (trombone), David
Taylor (drums), Mat Miles (tenor saxophone), Wilson Brown (piano) and Missy
Babcock (vocals).
Watkins
says the group has three main goals in mind as they go about their
performances.
“The
very first and most important reason we do this is role modeling for our
students,” he said.
The
other reasons he mentioned were the development of the abilities of the
faculty and the artistic development that comes with creating new music.
Starting
out six years ago as a trio, Swingset now has a
CD entitled “My Favorite Things” released in 2002 that features
original compositions as well as arrangements done by Watkins and Brown on
the piano.
The
group is planning a return tour of Europe for next
July, and plans on releasing its second CD shortly after they return.
