REXBURG,
Idaho – President
Thomas S. Monson, first counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will preside at summer graduation at
Brigham Young University-Idaho Friday, August 22.
Graduation
will begin at 10 a.m. in the Hart
Auditorium and tickets are not required to attend.
A
total of 436 graduates will receive degrees following the summer term that
ends Aug. 21. There will be 265
bachelor’s degrees and 179 associate degrees awarded.
The
Grad Fest Barbecue will be held from 4-7
p.m. the night before graduation in the parking lot just north
of Viking Stadium. Graduation day will begin with a breakfast for all
summer graduates from 7:30-9 a.m.
in the Manwaring
Center.
President
Monson serves as first vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of BYU-Idaho.
While on campus he will also preside over the dedicatory service of the new
Jacob Spori Building
at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.
He
has been a counselor in the First Presidency since Nov. 10, 1985. He was ordained an apostle
and called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on October 4, 1963, at the age of 36.
He
served as president of the Church’s Canadian Mission, headquartered
in Toronto, Ontario,
from 1959 to 1962. Prior to that time he served in the presidency of the
Temple View Stake in Salt Lake City, Utah,
and as a bishop of the 67th Ward in that stake.
Born
in Salt Lake City Aug. 21, 1927, he attended Salt
Lake City public schools and graduated cum laude
from the University of Utah
in 1948, receiving a degree in business management. He did graduate work
and served as a member of the College
of Business faculty at the University
of Utah. He later received his
MBA degree from Brigham Young
University. Professionally,
President Monson has had a distinguished career in publishing and printing.
He also served as chairman of the board of Deseret
News Publishing Co.
For
many years, he served as a member of the Utah State Board of Regents, the
body that governs higher education in the state.
