An
open house for interested community members to tour the new Jacob
Spori Building
at Brigham Young University-Idaho will be held Friday, Sept. 12, from 4-8 p.m.
A
preview of the inaugural art show in the Spori
gallery also will be featured at the same time. The show is entitled
“Legacy of Light–The Influence of Impressionism.”
Located
near the corner of Second South Street and College
Avenue in Rexburg, the Spori Building
has 15 classrooms and labs and 34 offices for faculty. The first floor
houses the art gallery and Scroll newspaper office, the second floor houses
the Department of Communication offices and the third floor houses the
Department of Art offices and classrooms. The basement features a
broadcasting room and large lecture hall.
The
new 44,000 square foot building sits at the location of the original building
and bears a close resemblance to its predecessor in size and shape, rock
exterior, tall windows and pitched roof. However, the new building is
approximately 75 percent larger, due to a full basement and also because it
is deeper (from north to south).
The
building was designed by FFKR Architects of Salt Lake City and was built by
Layton Construction Co. of Sandy, Utah.
Some
rock and woodwork from the original building were preserved and are
incorporated into the design of the new building. A central focus of the
interior is the triangular wooden pediment from the front of the original
building has been mounted on the third floor.
