Brigham
Young University-Idaho is launching a new celebration and those involved
hope it will become a tradition each semester for students, employees,
community members and friends of the university.
“Spirit
Week is a celebration created specifically to share the unique atmosphere
and spirit found at BYU-Idaho,” Vice President Garth Hall says.
“It will be a time to connect with academics, activities and
traditions that tie the past, present and future together.”
Each
Spirit Week (October, February and July) will highlight different areas
within the university as well as feature a unique theme. Entertainment,
concerts, dances and other activities will be based on the theme for the
current semester.
Each
Spirit Week will be unique, although certain events will be recurring, such
as a torch-lighting ceremony, torch parade and the spectacular, which will
be a talent showcase comprised of students, alumni and faculty.
With
the recent opening of the Jacob Spori Building,
the first Spirit Week Oct. 13-19 will focus on “Celebrating the Spori.” It will include activities geared toward
the Communication and Art Departments,
which are now housed in the Spori
Building.
With
students in charge of organizing events and creating traditions, Hall hopes
to see the spirit of the new BYU-Idaho exemplified for the visiting alumni
and community members.
“What
we’re trying to do is have this a unique time to celebrate. The idea
is to keep each celebration simple and easy for the students to
organize,” Hall says.
Each
Spirit Week will also feature alumni activities, including class reunions
for former students. As part of the alumni luncheon hosted by BYU-Idaho
President David A. Bednar, the vision of the
school will be detailed for visitors in an effort to help them see the
changes stemming from the transition to a four-year university.
