The
critically acclaimed and world-traveled quartet, The Scholars of London, is
coming to BYU-Idaho Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 8-9, as part of the school’s
Center Stage Performance Arts Series.
Tickets
are $8 for the general public and $2 for currently enrolled BYU-Idaho
students. They can be purchased at the ticket office in the Manwaring Center,
calling the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office at 496-2230 or by visiting the website
at www.byui.edu/tickets.
Since
their professional debut in 1970, the group has performed in more than
2,500 concerts in more than 50 countries around the world. They have
performed in many of the world’s famous concert halls, including New
York’s Lincoln
Center, London’s
Royal Festival Hall and the Sydney Opera House.
The
name “Scholars” comes from the fact that the original members
of the group all were awarded scholarships to sing in the famous choir of
King’s College Chapel at Cambridge
University. The group has
retained two of the original members, and has since expanded to include a
female voice, expanding their repertoire and sound to include a wider
variety of numbers.
The
Scholars have been applauded by media reviews all across the country for
their ability to make the audience laugh and to blend their voices as they
sing. One performance even endured a power failure at the facility they
were performing at in New York.
The show went on under the lights of the exit signs.
Concert-goers
can expect a large variety of music during the performance. The program is
titled “500 Years of Song” and the show will live up to its
name. The singers, soprano Kym Amps,
counter-tenor Angus Davidson, tenor Robin Doveton
and bass David van Asch, combine the last 500
years of musical numbers to include in their concerts, ranging from
contemporary works to folk songs to Renaissance madrigals.
