The
annual Student Telefund Drive will take place Nov. 5-7 and 12-14. During
this time, student volunteers—mostly from the Student Alumni
Association—will be calling other students to request pledges to the
BYU–Idaho Fund and, specifically, the Student Legacy Endowment (SLE).
“This is not only a fundraising campaign where
students are able to literally bless the lives of fellow students, but it
is an opportunity to learn the real joy that comes from giving charitably,”
says D. Alton Hansen, annual giving director.
Students across campus are helping their fellow
students who are in need by giving what they can to the BYU–Idaho
Fund. Along with the telelfund
call they should be receiving, they should also get a letter from President
Bednar and an e-mail from John Anderson, student alumni president. Donations are always welcome in any
of the donation boxes across campus or in 220 of the Kimball Building.
Individual students or groups
interested in volunteering to make calls should contact John Anderson at and98065@byui.edu or Jake Woodhouse at woo98018@byui.edu.
The SLE is the key that opens the way for deserving
students who have suddenly found themselves unable to pay for school—and
sometimes even the necessities.
Without help from the SLE, some would be forced to discontinue their
BYU–Idaho education. Those who
benefit from this fund are expected to return what they are given, and a
little extra, to help future students in need.
This endowment is primarily used to assist students
who have used up all of their federal aid resources and whose parents are
unable to assist them. They
also need to have financial obligations that must be met immediately.
Liz Jacobsen of the Financial Aid Office said, "I
have found that the students who receive help through the Student Legacy
Endowment are very grateful for this means to obtain assistance for a short
period of time and are paying back to the endowment as they have
committed."
Students
receiving assistance through the SLE must be currently enrolled at BYU–Idaho
and be in good academic standing (at least a 2.0 GPA). Funds provided can only be used for
school-related items (e.g. tuition, fees, books, housing, food, and
transportation). Full tuition
and books will not be granted. # # #
