Parents
and students will have the chance to be oriented together in the first
annual Parents Day Saturday, Aug. 30, at Brigham Young University-Idaho.
Parents
Day comes just a few days before the beginning of fall semester classes
Sept. 3.
“Parents
are a student’s best advisor, so orienting them about the
fundamentals of student life at BYU-Idaho will allow them to understand and
help their son or daughter as they start the college experience,”
said Allen Jones, director of New Student Orientation.
The
day will start with a welcome assembly by President David A. and Susan K. Bednar at 1 p.m.
Following the welcome, there will be eight 30-minute sessions tailored
specifically for parents and three for students from 2-4 p.m. For parents, the session topics include
Academic Advising 101, Activities Program, Campus Orientation Preview,
I-Honor It!, Learning Assistance, Paying for College, Throughput and the Three
Track System.
For
students, the sessions are Getting Along With Roommates, Getting Involved
and a student question-and-answer session. During this same time campus
tours will be offered for parents and students.
Following
sessions and tours, a President’s Reception will be held at 4 p.m. when students and their parents can
meet the Bednars and the vice presidents of the
university. At
6 p.m. in the Manwaring
Center West Ballroom, a Polynesian luau will take place. The luau is a
ticketed event, $10 for parents and $7 for students. For each Parent
Session attended, parents will receive $2 rebates toward the price of
admission (limit $6 total rebate per parent).
Tickets
can be ordered by either calling (208) 496-2230 or going online at
www.byui.edu/tickets. Tickets should be ordered by Aug. 27 as seating is
limited.
