KBYU Television starts airing BYU-Idaho talks
PROVO, Utah –KBYU Television based in Provo, Utah, has begun airing Brigham Young University-Idaho devotionals and Education Week presentations every Sunday at 3 p.m. KBYU, which reaches approximately 2 million people in approximately 726,000 households, is a public television station and an affiliate of PBS. Its programming comprises both original productions and programming from PBS and other public-television-type sources. “KBYU is a traditional broadcast station,” Jim Bell, manager of marketing and communications at KBYU and BYU Television, said. “We broadcast over the air from southern Idaho to Mesquite, Nev.” In the past, devotionals and Education Week presentations have aired on BYU TV, another division of BYU’s broadcast services. BYU TV is delivered worldwide over satellite systems, cable and the Internet. It has a larger scope than KBYU, reaching 20 million homes in the United States alone. Its programming includes General Conference (live and rebroadcast), various events from BYU, BYU-Idaho and BYU-Hawaii’s campuses, symposia, devotionals, firesides, BYU sports, BYU musical events and original documentaries. “With BYU Television, which is an international programming service, we view the BYU system as a united whole. So while we’re part of the Provo campus, we’re working with BYU-Idaho and BYU-Hawaii to generate and deliver content from all three institutions. We have an international reach, and it’s been by design that we’re trying to include other campuses in what we broadcast. We look for content that originates on the campuses that would have interest to a broad audience,” Bell said. Airing the devotionals and Education Week on KBYU is advantageous because “not everyone in KBYU’s viewing audience has BYU Television, so it extends the audience significantly,” Bell said. Although they differ in scope and in programming, both KBYU and BYU Television offer advantages to viewers. “I think to both alumni and Church members in general, it provides them with a connection to these campuses that many of them wouldn’t otherwise have. . . . Even those of us who live here along the Wasatch Front benefit from having access to that information in our homes,” Bell said. KBYU’s programming can be accessed at http://www.kbyu.org/tv/today.asp.
