KBYI-FM
radio station in Rexburg, in conjunction with public radio stations across the
nation, will hold a fall membership drive Nov. 3-8.
“Because
KBYI is commercial-free programming, support comes in large measure from
the listeners,” said Jim Clark, KBYI general manager.
“Some
listeners will choose to contribute financial support to a specific program
they like,” he said. “Others choose to support programming in a
more general sense. Audience members understand and believe in the mission
of public radio, and they want to be a part of supporting a commercial-free
broadcast endeavor.”
As
a token of appreciation, the station will offer gifts-including CDs,
T-shirts, books, KBYI Thermoses and Smithsonian engagement calendars.
However, Clark prefers to focus on participation.
“The
KBYI membership drive is asking for participation from listeners in support
of the products they hear on KBYI. . . . Many people contributing small
amounts will help us meet our programming costs.”
KBYI
has grown remarkably in recent years, according to Clark.
A survey recently completed by Eastlan Resources
indicates KBYI listenership has grown from a .5
rating in 1999 to a 13.7 rating in 2003. The current rating of 13.7 ranks
KBYI among the top five of the 17 stations in the survey. Data collected
represents Bonneville County,
measuring the average quarter-hour listenership,
24 hours each day of the week in the 25-year-old-plus market segment.
KBYI,
which is owned and operated by Brigham Young University-Idaho, broadcasts
from the campus at a power of 100,000 watts to southeastern Idaho
and parts of Wyoming and Montana.
Programming
sources include National Public Radio and Public Radio International, as
well as locally produced news and public affairs programming. Devotionals
from Brigham Young University-Idaho are broadcast live at 2 p.m. Tuesdays
and repeated that night at 9 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. Classical music,
jazz and folk music can be heard along with news and information 24 hours
each day.
Contributions
can be made by calling the station locally at (208) 496-2907 or toll-free
at 1-800-554-5742 or by visiting the KBYI website at www.kbyi.org.
