KBYI
100.5 FM, in conjunction with public radio stations across the nation, will
hold its semiannual membership drive Oct. 19-25 and invites listeners to
contribute to the programming fund.
Because
KBYI is commercial-free programming, support comes in large measure from
the listeners, says Jim Clark, KBYI general manager.
“Some
listeners will choose to contribute financial support to a specific program
they like,” he says. “Others choose to support programming in a more
general sense. Audience members understand and believe in the mission of
public radio, and they want to be a part of supporting a commercial-free
broadcast endeavor.”
As
a token of appreciation, the station will offer gifts – including CDs,
t-shirts, books, a one-year subscription to Newsweek and membership in the
Eliza R. Snow Society for the Arts – based on donation level. However,
Clark prefers to focus on participation.
“The
KBYI membership drive is asking for participation from listeners in support
of the product they hear on KBYI,” he says. “Many people contributing small
amounts will help us meet our programming costs.”
KBYI
has grown remarkably in recent years, Clark says. A survey recently
completed by Eastlan Resources indicates KBYI listenership has grown from a
3.5 share in 1999 to an 11 share in 2002. The current percent of
listenership ranks KBYI number-one among the 17 stations in the survey.
Data collected was for Bonneville County measuring the average quarter-hour
listenership, 24 hours each day of the week in the 25-year-old-plus adult
market segment.
KBYI,
which is owned and operated by Brigham Young University-Idaho, broadcasts
from the campus at a power of 100,000 watts to southeastern Idaho and parts
of Wyoming and Montana.
Programming
sources include National Public Radio, Public Radio International, and
locally produced news and public affairs programming. Devotionals from
BYU-Idaho are aired live at 2 p.m. on Tuesday and repeated that evening at
9 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. Classical music, and jazz and folk music can be
heard along with news and information 24 hours each day.
Contributions can be made by
calling the station locally at 496-2907 or toll-free at 1-800-554-5742, or
by logging on to the station’s new web site, www.kbyi.org.
