The
BYU-Idaho Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Halloween Concert Oct.
29-31 in the Barrus Concert Hall of the Snow
Center for the Performing Arts.
The popular concert is also a fund-raiser for student scholarships.
Shows
will be held at 6 and 8:30 p.m.
Wednesday and Thursday and at 7 p.m.
on Halloween night. Tickets are $5 for the public and $1 for current
BYU-Idaho students. They may purchased by calling the BYU-Idaho Ticket
Office at 496-2230, or online at www.byui.edu/tickets.
With
this year’s run of performances, the orchestra will play its one
hundredth Halloween Concert, an annual tradition since 1984.
As
with previous concerts, this year’s concert series will feature a
selection of music and other surprises that will center around the theme “1001
Halloween Nights.”
“First
and foremost there will a lot of great music. With that, a whole bunch of
sheer silliness we hope will serve as bait to hook everyone to the music,”
said Kevin Call, Symphony Orchestra director.
The
principal piece this year is Rimsky-Korsakoff’s “Scheherazade,”
which musically tells the stories of the “1001 Arabian Nights,”
which include Sinbad, Aladdin and others. They will also perform excerpts
from the Aladdin Suite by composer Carl Nielsen, and music from the Disney
film “Aladdin.”
The
BYU-Idaho Contemporary Dance Team will also be performing two movements of
the “Scheherazade,” offering audiences a look into the piece
through both music and dance.
Call,
also known as “The Count” during the program, encourages
audience members to join the orchestra performers in wearing costumes to
the concert.
