Enrollment
at BYU-Idaho pushed slightly upward for Fall Semester compared to the same
time last year.
Official
fall enrollment is 10,484 full-time equivalent students, compared to 10,199
for Fall Semester of 2002. (Full-time equivalent or FTE is based on a
student taking 15 credit hours.)
Registrar
Kevin Miyasaki says, “We’re happy with where we’re at. We
are pretty well on target.”
The
actual head count stands at 11,137, compared to 10,703 for last fall.
Enrollment includes 3,248 freshmen, 3,202 sophomores, 2,561 juniors and
2,126 seniors.
Miyasaki
says the number of freshmen may seem low, but many new freshmen were
already admitted during the summer track.
The
number of married students continues to climb and stands at a record 2,579,
or 23 percent of the student body. Last year at the same time there were
1,929 married students (18 percent of student body).
The
number of students who served missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints is also at an all-time high of 4,328 students.
The
university has 8,412 continuing students, with 1,883 new students and 842
returning after an absence of one or more semesters, including those who
are re-entering after serving church missions.
There
are 6,069 females (56 percent) compared to 4,905 male students.
Students
from all 50 states are represented in the university. The number of
students from Idaho continues
to increase, standing at 4,089. However, Miyasaki attributes this increase
to married students originally from other states who
are now using Idaho as their
home address.
Other
states with high numbers of students are Utah,
1,235; California, 1,078; Washington,
905; and Oregon, 475. There
are 287 international students representing 41 countries. Of these, 153 are
from Canada.
The
most popular majors are 1,437 in general studies, 1,122 in business and 992
in elementary education.
