The
College of Business
and Communication at BYU-Idaho has named Robyn Bergstrom as the college’s
new associate dean and Ron Bennett as the new Department of Communication
chairman.
The
change came after Lee Warnick, who had been serving as the Department of
Communication chairman, took over responsibilities at the Scroll, BYU-Idaho’s
student newspaper. Ron Bennett had been serving as associate dean for the
business and communication department.
An
alumna of Ricks College
in 1973-75, Bergstrom has taught at Ricks
College and BYU-Idaho for the
past 10 years. She attended BYU in Provo
before receiving her master’s degree in communication from the
University of North Dakota. She is also a Ph.D. candidate at the University
of Idaho in higher education
teaching and learning.
For
the past six years Bergstrom has been involved with the Urban Studies
Program, acting as the director for a girls camp
that benefits inner-city youth in Chicago.
The program uses BYU-Idaho students as counselors to serve as mentors for
youths ages 10-15.
As
associate dean, Bergstrom will be on the curriculum council and help with
student occupational development and the approval of graduating students.
“I’ve
had a fabulous experience here at BYU-Idaho. I love teaching and advising.
Students are my number one priority,” she said.
Bennett
attended Ricks College
before receiving a bachelor’s degree from BYU and later a master’s
degree from Idaho State
University. A native of Idaho
Falls and Rigby, Bennett worked professionally in
journalism for many years and taught high school English and journalism
before coming to BYU-Idaho 10 years ago.
Bennett
will help oversee the faculty of the rapidly growing department, which grew
from 650 majors last year to more than 800 at the beginning of fall
semester. He also teaches several writing classes in the department.
With
the increase in communication majors and the bachelor's program coming on
line with the emphasis areas of journalism, broadcast, organization, public
relations and advertising, Bennett says the experience will be challenging
but rewarding.
"I’ve had a wonderful experience here,”
he said. “I love my position, especially in the classroom. The
students are outstanding, hard-working young people, and it's a pleasure to
help them with their education."
