BYU-Idaho’s “Christmas in the Snow” will grow to three
performances this year because of growing popularity.
The
choral concert, formerly called Ricks Musical Christmas, will feature about
275 students in the Barrus Concert Hall of the Snow Center for the
Performing Arts. The concerts will be held Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. and
Saturday, Dec. 7, at both 6 and 8:30 p.m.
Tickets
are $2 for the general public and $1 for BYU-Idaho students and are available
at the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office. Call 496-2230 for more information.
The
Christmas tradition that started in 1995 features several campus groups,
including the Collegiate Singers conducted by Kevin Brower, Men’s Choir
conducted by Randall Kempton, Women’s Choir conducted by Eda Ashby,
Percussion Ensemble conducted by David Taylor and Chamber Brass conducted
by Bryce Mecham. The performance also includes narrative through the spoken
word.
“The
tradition of this concert is that we focus more on the sacred elements of
Christmas,” Brower said. “There are pieces in the work that are more
fun-spirited and lively. The main focus, however, is on the birth of
Christ. People who have come to this concert in the past know that it’s a
wonderful way to usher in the season.”
Music
will vary from traditional songs such as “I Saw Three Ships” and “God Rest
Ye Merry Gentlemen” to the popular African Christmas carol “Betelehemu”
performed by the Men’s Choir. # # #
