Cherish
the Ladies has traveled the globe, performing in the finest concert halls
and international festivals. Last February they were named “Best
Musical Group” at the BBC Folk Awards.
The
Irish-American group based in New York City consists of six female
musicians: Joanie Madden on flute, whistles and harmony vocals; Mary Coogan
on guitar, banjo and mandolin; Mary Raffertyon on accordion, flute,
whistles and concertina; Deirdre Connolly on lead vocals, whistles and
bodhran; Donna Long on piano, fiddle and harmony vocals; and Marie Reilly
on fiddle and whistles.
Initially,
the group won recognition as the first and only all-women traditional Irish
band, but they soon won thousands of fans with their unique blend of instruments,
original arrangements and step dancing.
These
ladies have shared the stage with entertainment icons such as James Taylor,
Joan Baez, Emmy Lou Harris, The Chieftains and dozens of symphony
orchestras. The “Celtic Album,” their collaboration with the
Boston Pops Symphony led to a 1999 Grammy Award nomination. In addition,
they were chosen to represent Irish music and culture at the Official
Cultural Olympiad at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Cherish
the Ladies has been heralded as “one of the foremost Irish
traditional music groups in the world” by the New York Daily News.
They combine all the facets of Irish traditional culture and put it forth
in a humorous and entertaining package. # # #
