President and Sister Wilkes to speak

at first devotional of Winter Semester

 

 

            REXBURG, Idaho - The first devotional of the winter semester will be January 11, at 2 p.m. in the Hart Auditorium. Brigham Young University-Idaho Interim President Robert M. Wilkes and his wife Estella will speak.

            President Wilkes served at Ricks College as a faculty member, a department head, a division chair, and from January of 1999 to December 2003 he served as the BYU-Idaho student life vice president.

            President Wilkes, 64, was born and raised in Afton, Wyoming. He served a full-time mission as a young man for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central States Mission. He received his bachelor’s degree from BYU in history and physical education and his master’s degree in educational administration.

            He began at Ricks College in 1970 teaching in the religion department. He served five years as chairman of the Department of Recreation Education and five years as chairman of the Division of Education. He was awarded the BYU-Idaho Man of Excellence Award in February 2004. He also presided over the Wisconsin Milwaukee Mission from 1995 to 1998.

            He and his wife Estella have six children and presently have 19 grandchildren.

            Devotionals are held every Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Hart Auditorium. Overflow locations are available in the Kirkham Auditorium, the Taylor Chapel and the Hinckley Chapel.

            Students attending devotionals should comply with devotional etiquette, which includes the following: dress appropriately for the occasion, remove hats, arrive early or on time, do not bring or use laser pointers at any BYU-Idaho assembly or gathering, save only one extra seat and only until five minutes before the hour, refrain from talking, turn off cell phones and pagers, help promote a spiritual environment, no food or drink, refrain from applause, refrain from doing anything that would disturb the concentration of others or detract from the spirit of the meeting and remain seated until the closing prayer has been said.

            The following week’s devotional speaker will be Elder J. Ballard Washburn, a former member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Devotionals are broadcast live on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. on KBYI, FM 100.
