REXBURG,
Idaho — Brigham Young University-Idaho’s Scroll was honored
last week in Nashville, Tenn. at the National Media Advisor’s
Conference as one of the top 25 university newspapers in the nation.
The
Associated Collegiate Press worked in conjunction with the Newspaper
Association of America Foundation to award the top 25 collegiate
newspapers. The Harvard Crimson, the Daily Northwestern and the BYU-Idaho Scroll
were among the nominees.
“This
solidifies our reputation as a program that does a good job preparing students
for professional work. This is an award that professionals pay attention
to,” said Lee Warnick, the Scroll faculty
advisor.
Several
students accompanied faculty members to Nashville to the conference. Among them
was Scroll editor in chief Walter Cooley.
“It
shows the tradition of BYU-Idaho. It’s not something that happened
over night, this achievement is something built over several years,”
said Cooley, a senior communication student with a journalism emphasis.
Of
almost 500 universities and colleges represented, the Scroll was the
only school to receive two Pacemaker Awards. In addition to being
recognized for one of the best printed newspapers in the country, a second
award was given for Scroll’s online version. Only 11 online
papers in the country were given such a distinction.
“We
also have a lot of talent here, but this represents a lot of dedication,
extra-mile effort and an ongoing commitment to excellence,” said Warnick.
The
Pacemaker Award is the highest award that a university newspaper can
receive and will set a precedent for future BYU-Idaho journalists.
