The
First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is
pleased to announce that Robert M. Wilkes has been appointed to serve as
interim president of BYU-Idaho, effective 1 December 2004.
Robert
Wilkes has served at Ricks College
/ BYU-Idaho as a faculty member, as a department head, as a division chair,
and, most recently, as the student life vice president from January of 1999
through December of 2003. He was instrumental in executing the transition
of Ricks College
to BYU-Idaho and is intimately aware of the mission of the university and
brings broad experience and sound judgment to this new responsibility.
Brother
Wilkes and his wife Estella will be introduced to the campus community by
Elder David A. Bednar at the weekly devotional on Tuesday, November 16, at 2 p.m. Elder Bednar and his wife, Susan,
will be the main speakers during the special devotional.
Tickets
will be required to attend the devotional in the Hart Auditorium. The free
tickets may be ordered online at www.byui.edu/tickets beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and are available only to
BYU-Idaho students and employees. One ticket may be obtained per student or
employee. Open seating will be available, but no saving of seats will be
permitted. The online tickets may be picked up at the Manwaring
Center Ticket Office starting Monday morning when it opens at 9:30 a.m.
Non-ticketed,
overflow locations for Tuesday’s devotional will include the Taylor
Chapel, Hinckley Chapel and Kirkham Auditorium.
The devotional will also be carried live on KBYI, 100.5 FM, and rebroadcast
again at 7 p.m.
Biographical Information
Robert
M. Wilkes, age 64, of Rexburg was born and reared in Afton,
Wyoming. As a young man, he served as a
full-time missionary in the Central States Mission for The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. He received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham
Young University
in history and physical education and his master of education degree in
educational administration. He also
studied at the University of Wyoming
and University of Nevada
at Reno.
He
began his employment at Ricks College
in 1970 as a faculty member in the Department of Religion. He served five
years as a chairman of the Department of Recreation Education, five years
as chairman of the Division of Religious and Family Living, and four years
as chairman of the Division of Education. He served as vice president of
Student Life from January 1999 to December 2003. He was honored as the
BYU-Idaho Man of Excellence in February 2004.
He
has served as a bishop twice, a counselor in a stake presidency, a high
counselor, stake president, Regional Representative, and as president of
the Wisconsin Milwaukee Mission from 1995 to 1998.
He
and his wife Estella are the parents of six children—three girls and
three boys. At the present time, they have 19 grandchildren.
