BYU-Idaho Collegiate Singers and

University Choir to perform Nov. 5

 

 

REXBURG, Idaho - Brigham Young University-Idaho choirs will come together to present “How Excellent Thy Name” on Friday, Nov. 5, in the Barrus Concert Hall of the Snow Center for Performing Arts.

            University Choir, directed by Randall Kempton of the Music Department faculty, will present Psalms from a variety of composers from a variety of cultures. An African drum piece will feature Chad Busath and Lisa Payne on African djembe drums as well as student soloists.  Many other songs will be performed including “How Excellent Thy Name” by G. F. Handel.

            “Our program is designed to take people on a spiritual journey, and we’re trying to explore different aspects of praise and worship of our heavenly father as expressed by different composers in different countries,” said Kempton.

            Collegiate Singers, an auditioned choir, is led by Kevin Brower of the Music Department faculty. They will perform a variety of Christmas songs from “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Rui, Rui, Chiu,” a traditional Christmas song in Spanish, to an arrangement of “Rock of Ages” by Nori Brower, of the Music Department faculty.

            Collegiate Singers will also perform an arrangement of “Silent Night” by Mack Wilberg. It will feature the men of Collegiate Singers and soloist Luke Lords. “Lo, How a Rose e’er Blooming,” a traditional German Christmas hymn, will be sung in German.

            Other songs sung by Collegiate Singers will feature different other performers, like choir-member Jason Gunnell on the organ, oboist Kristin Diehl, harpist Melody Howe and Benjamin Matthews on guitar.

            Tickets are still available at the Ticket Office for $1 for BYU-Idaho students and $2 for the general public.
