REXBURG,
Idaho — The BYU-Idaho Chamber Strings will perform Aaron
Copeland’s “Appalachian Spring Suite” Thursday, Oct. 7,
at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrus Concert Hall of the
Eliza R. Snow Center for the Performing Arts.
Tickets
are $2 for the general public and $1 for BYU-Idaho students. They may be
purchased by calling the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office at 496-2230 or online at http://www.byui.edu/Tickets/.
The
28-member ensemble will be under the direction of Robert Tueller, a BYU-Idaho Department of Music faculty
member. They will perform the suite, which comes from Copeland’s
“Appalachian Spring: Ballet Suite,” in its original version for
flute, clarinet, bassoon, piano and a small group of strings.
The
piece focuses on a newlywed couple’s house in the Pennsylvania hills during the early part
of the 19th century. Revivalists and an older neighbor remind them of the hardships
and aspects of human fate. In the end, the couple becomes quiet and strong
in their new house.
“The
music is best described as American,” Tueller
said. “The listener will hear elements of jazz, western and folk
music, including a country hoe-down and the Shaker tune: ‘Simple
Gifts.’ ”
The
ensemble will also perform “Three preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes”
by Ralph Vaughan Williams and “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten” by Arvo Pärt.
