REXBURG,
Idaho – The LDS Cadet Choir from the
U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado
Springs, Colo.,
will present a free musical program at Brigham Young University-Idaho
Saturday, Oct. 9.
The
program will be held in the Barrus Concert Hall
of the Snow Center for the Performing Arts at 7
p.m.
Tickets
are required to ensure seating but are free to the general public. For
tickets, call the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office weekdays at 496-2230 or pick them
up at the Ticket Office in the Manwaring Center.
The
LDS Cadet Choir was formed in 1996 when the head chaplain at the Air Force
Academy attended an LDS institute class and listened to the young men sing.
He was so moved by the hymns, he suggested that they form a choir.
The
choir consists of approximately 50 young men ranging from freshmen to
seniors and approximately half have served missions for The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The choir will perform 10-12 songs interspersed with four short
talks by cadets.
Andrew
Groberg, a third class cadet from Idaho Falls, is a
member of the choir.
His
father, Dr. George Groberg of Idaho Falls, says, “It’s an
inspiring and patriotic program. They’re not world class singers, but
they are very good and it’s uplifting.”
The
choir has performed at Temple
Square and the Joseph
Smith Memorial
Building in Salt
Lake City, for inmates at prisons in Utah
and Colorado, and at firesides in Colorado, New Mexico,
Nevada and Utah.
Cadets
at the Air Force Academy take 21 credit hours per semester with mandatory
athletic and military training, leaving very little free time. The
rehearsal time for the choir is what takes up these cadets’ free
time, showing what kind of commitment they have made to share their music
with others.
Upon
graduating from the Air Force Academy, cadets are commissioned as second
lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force. Many of those will attend pilot training
or take other assignments.
