Based on a short story by Stephen Vincent Benet
and later developed into a movie, “Seven Brides for Seven for
Brothers” was eventually made into a stage production.
The story revolves around a family of bachelors living in the Oregon
wilderness in the 1850s. The play follows their journey of learning
civility and how to handle relationships.
They begin their quest for wives after the oldest brother, Adam, marries
Millie. Millie comes into their lives and teaches them the intricacies of
town life. The six unmarried brothers, in their exuberance, kidnap six town
girls. And as the story progresses, everyone ends up getting more than they
had ever bargained for.
The show is directed by BYU-Idaho Theater faculty member Roger
Merrill. The orchestra is conducted by Music Department faculty member Ted
Ashton and the choreographer is dance faculty member Jennifer
O’Farrell.
According to Merrill, the cast for the show has accomplished a lot
in the five intense weeks they have practiced. “They've just had a
great time together and I think that will translate onto stage,” he
says.
Merrill says that show is pretty high energy, as there is a mix of
singing, dancing, romance and comedy.
