DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS

Direct objects answer the question what ? or whom? She buys the blouse.  (She buys what?) You write a lot of letters. (You write what?) I see Juan.  (I see whom?) We call María.  (We call whom?)

Direct objects can also be pronouns. She buys it.  (referring to the blouse) You write them.  (referring to the letters) I see him.  (referring to Juan) We call her.  (referring to María)

Spanish works much the same way when the object is a thing. Ella compra una blusa. Tú escribes muchas cartas. Jodi toca el violín. Yo no como tacos.

A personal a precedes the direct object when it refers to a person. Veo a Juan. Llamamos a María. Visitamos a José y a Anita. Escuchamos a las chicas.

Object pronouns precede the conjugated verb. Ella la compra.  (referring to la blusa) Tú las escribes. (referring to cartas) Jodi lo toca.  (referring to el violín) Yo no los como. (referring to tacos)

We can refer to people either by name or with a pronoun. Veo a Juan.  =  Lo veo. Llamamos a María. = La llamamos. Visitamos a José y a Anita. = Los visitamos. Escuchamos a las chicas. = Las escuchamos.

Object pronouns may follow infinitives. Ella piensa comprarla. (referring to la blusa) Preferimos visitarlos.  (referring to them) Quiero llamarla.   (referring to María) Voy a verlo.  (referring to Juan)

Object pronouns may follow present participles.  (Notice the accents) No estoy comiéndolos.  (referring to tacos) Jodi está  tocándolo.  (referring to el violín) Estamos escuchándolas.  (referring to ellas) Estás escribiéndolas.  (referring to las cartas)

Change the direct object nouns to pronouns. Llamo al profesor.      Lo llamo. Escribo la tarea.      La escribo. Preparo las enchiladas.      Las preparo.

Change these also. Voy a llamar al profesor.     Voy a llamarlo.  or  Lo voy a llamar. Voy a escribir la tarea.     Voy a escribirla.  or  La voy a escribir. Voy a comer las enchiladas.     Voy a comerlas.  or  Las voy a comer.

More practice. Estoy llamando al profesor.    Estoy llamándolo.  or  Lo estoy llamando. Estoy haciendo la tarea.    Estoy haciéndola.  or  La estoy haciendo.
