Informal Commands

The stem for the affirmative informal command  is the infinitive stem. tomar            tom- comer           com- escribir         escrib-

The ending is the theme vowel .     -ar  verbs use -a;                                       -er  and -ir   verbs use -e. tomar             tom-                toma comer            com-               come escribir         escrib-          escribe

Four verbs use only the stem, no ending. salir          sal-             sal poner       pon-           pon tener        ten-            ten venir         ven-           ven

Four verbs are a little different. hacer         hac-           haz decir          dec-            di ser              s-                   sé ir                   --                   ve

To make negative tú commands, start with the yo  form present indicative and drop the -o .   Add the opposite theme vowel and s.

-ar  verbs end in -es; -er/-ir  verbs end in -as. pensar    pienso    piens-    no pienses comer     como        com-      no comas poner      pongo       pong-    no pongas estar        estoy         est-        no estés dar             doy             d-             no des

Try some. tomar                  no tomes         (from tomo) tener                  no tengas        (from tengo) conocer                  no conozcas    (from conozco)

Two are irregular ir               voy           no vayas ser           soy           no seas

Sing it. Sal, pon, ten, ven. Sal, pon, ten, ven. Haz, di, sé, ve. Haz, di, sé, ve. No vayas, no seas son irregulares. Ten cuidado; no hagas errores. Sal, pon, ten, ven. Sal, pon, ten, ven.

Object pronouns attach to the affirmative commands. (Notice the accent marks.) Hazlo. Ponlo en la mesa. Apréndelo. Háblame.

Object pronouns precede the negative commands. No lo hagas. No lo pongas en la mesa. No lo aprendas. No me hables.
