Formal Commands

The stem of the formal commands is the yo form present indicative.  Drop the -o & reverse the theme vowel for the endings.

The ending for -ar verbs is -e; the ending for -er/-ir verbs is -a. infinitive       stem          command tomar            tomo          tome comer           como         coma escribir         escribo       escriba hacer            hago           haga poner            pongo        ponga pensar          pienso        peinse

Give the formal command of: estudiar                  estudie leer                  lea dormir                  duerma

Give the formal command of: hacer                   haga escuchar                   escuche escribir                   escriba

Give the formal command of: salir           salga venir            venga servir            sirva

The negative command uses the same form. No salga. No venga. No sirva.

Object pronouns follow the affirmative command but precede the negative command. Hágalo.             No lo haga. Hábleme.          No me hable. Cómprelas.       No las compre.

How would you say Write it. (referring to la carta)      Escríbala. Don’t write it.      No la escriba. Tell me.      Dígame. Don’t tell me.      No me diga.

Make the commands plural by adding -n to the verb. Vuelvan pronto. No salgan todavía. Cómprenlo allí. No las pierdan

Give the plural commands. Take the train.      Tomen el tren. Don’t cook it.      No lo cocinen. Return tomorrow.      Vuelvan mañana
