Break Out Sessions Participants separate into small groups under the direction of a group leader who has attended a previous session
Teaching Successes Participants share successful activities they have tried with their classes. These activities can be simple. The atmosphere is very low key and non-judgmental.
Exchange of Papers Participants bring a hard copy explanation of the activities they want to share. Thus they can share their ideas with the entire group even though they meet in break out sessions with smaller numbers.
Vote with Your Feet A summit favorite, many take this activity back into their classrooms with great success.
1. Participants write concerns on slips submitted to the session director.
2. He or she reads these anonymous comments.
3. Participants express their opinions on these comments by "voting with their feet." One wall in the room represents strongly agree, the opposite wall represents strongly disagree, a third wall agree, and the opposite wall disagree. After the comment is read, participants move to the side of the room corresponding with their opinion.
4. The director randomly selects a representative from each side of the room to explain their position.
5. Participants can change sides after hearing this explanation.
It is fun way to discuss issues.
Teaching Challenges Participants discuss in small groups the challenges that teachers at Ricks face.
Group Decisions: Each of the small groups lists a few challenges. With the entire on Challenges group, participants compare these challenges and list the several underlying challenges.Discussions of Solutions underlying challenges. Each group chooses one challenge to focus on.
Presentations on Teaching - A representative from each group presents their solutions to the
Challenges and Solutions entire group and answers questions.
Non-Astounding Teaching be simple "non-astounding" ideas that the presenter has found useful. Such sharing is non-judgmental and proves the premise of the summit "faculty themselves are the essential resource needed to strengthen each other." Many participants agreed that these simple ideas would could enhance their own teaching.
Great Books Participants brought a book related to teaching. They quickly summarized what they learned from the book. A bibliography of the books was made available afterward.
Great Teaching Presentations The session leader asks participants to reflect on the summit and summarize their learning. Some participants share their ideas.
