How to Format Your Paper

This section is a guide to the following:

  • Formatting Your Title Page (if one is required)
  • Formatting Your Overall Paper

Formatting Your Title Page

When writing a paper in APA format, you may or may not need a title page.  If a title page is required, please adhere to the following guidelines:

Your title page should include a running head, title, author, and company or university you work for. Your running head, located in the top right-hand corner of the page, should include a 1-2 word version of title, five spaces, and the page number.

Formatting Your Overall Paper

  • Margins
  • Font and Spacing
  • Headings and Subheadings

Margins

Before you begin writing, set your margins to one inch on all sides and left-justify your paper.

Font and Spacing

Set your font to Times New Roman and 12-point font. Double-space your whole document.

Headings and Subheadings

Headings of your paper should be centered, and the first letter of each word should be capitalized, except for articles (a, an, and the).

Subheadings do not begin on new pages but still should be centered and capitalized, with spaces in between the text and the title.
