St. Anthony Sand Dune Rules and Regulations

Open Campfire Rules

  • Open campfires are prohibited inside the Sand Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA) except in the designated Red Road Open Sand Campfire Area.

  • The burning of any foreign material other than wood in all campsites is prohibited throughout the St. Anthony Sand Dunes Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA).  Prohibited materials include, but is not limited to, pallets, treated lumber, tires glass, aluminum, etc..

Public Health, Safety, and Comfort Rules

  • Use of personal water craft or any other motorized vehicle or craft is prohibited on any body of water inside the (WSA).

  • Quiet hours within the Egin Lake Access Site and Red Road Recreation Area is from 11p.m. to 7 a.m.

  • Engaging in fighting is prohibited.  No person under the age of twenty-one (21) shall possess or consume any alcoholic beverage, as defined by Idaho Code Title 23-105.

  • Addressing any offensive, derisive, or annoying communication that has a direct tendency to cause acts of violence by the person to whom the remark is addressed, is prohibited.

As a Reminder, the Following Rules are Still in Effect

  1. Idaho residents must display a valid state ORV sticker on their motorcycle, All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), Off Highway Vehicle (OHV), and Off Road Vehicle (ORV), (Idaho State Code 67-7122).
  2. Out of state ATV, OHV, ORV, and motorcycle users must have a valid registration sticker for the state in which they reside, if the state requires such a registration.  If your state requires a sticker and you do not have one, you may be cited in Idaho for failure to register your vehicle.
  3. The speed limit on the Egin Lake Access road is 15 MPH and 5 MPH within the camping, parking, and access areas.
  4. A portions of the Sand Mountain Wilderness Study Area are affected by a seasonal closure for all forms of human entry from January 1st-March 31st and/or January 1st-April 30th of each year.
  5. All ORV's shall be equipped with a 6-foot (minimum) whip mast and a 6x12 inch red or orange flag.
  6. Within the Wilderness Study Area Boundaries, possession of or use of any glass container or cup, empty or not, used for carrying any liquid for drinking purposes is prohibited.
  7. No highway-licensed vehicles are allowed on the Sand Dunes.
  8. All off-road vehicle use must occur on the open sand areas or on roads and trails displaying a "Designated Route" sign.  ORV use is prohibited on roads and trails that do not display a "Designated Route" sign.   Specifically, no designated routes exist in the vicinity of the Egin Lakes Access.   Riders should follow the dunes access route to the open sand and avoid all vegetated areas.

On May 26, 1999, new BLM supplementary rules designed to promote public safety went into effect.  On September 1, 1999, an "under age drinking" rule went into effect.
