Returning Missionary Program

Elder David A. Bednar referred to Brigham Young University–Idaho as a “Disciple Preparation Center.” Just as the Missionary Training Center prepares missionaries with the techniques, spiritual motivation, and focus that will make each a more effective missionary, BYU–Idaho seeks to provide each student with the education, spiritual growth, and desire to serve and lead in any capacity. By embracing this atmosphere, students become effective disciple-leaders as they grow
in their personal relationship with the Savior through teaching and learning from those around them.
Students who flourish at BYU–Idaho are those who have developed attributes of personal consecration, love, enthusiasm, and obedience. We seek students who understand obedience invites the Spirit and who teach and live accordingly. More information about BYU–Idaho and its atmosphere is found at www.byui.edu/admissions/foundationaltalks.
MISSIONARIES RETURNING ON DEFERMENT
BYU–Idaho’s innovative calendar is comprised of three semesters: summer, fall, and
winter. Two of the three semesters are combined to make a track. The three tracks
are: Summer/Fall, Fall/Winter, and Winter/Summer. Simply put, there are more
options in scheduling so students can meet life’s other demands. Please visit www.byui.edu/admissions/tracksystem.htm for further information.

Fall/Winter Track September-April.
Winter/Summer Track January – July. Summer/Fall Track April –July September-December. |
| Seven Week break: Mid July to Mid Sept. |
Students who intend to return to BYU–Idaho after serving a full-time mission should fill
out a missionary deferment form. Completion of this form enables
the applicant to return to his/her track without having to reapply to
BYU–Idaho. This form is accessible online at www.byui.edu/admissions/deferments.htm.
Because of varying missionary return dates, some returning missionaries must wait several months before they can enroll in the
next semester of their assigned track. To create a more seamless
transition from mission to study at BYU–Idaho, missionaries returning
to BYU–Idaho on deferment can now enroll in the next available
semester, regardless of their permanent track. *If the next available
semester is part of a student’s assigned track, there is no change
involved.
Students whose next available semester will be their off-track semester will now be allowed to enter during that semester by filling out an appeal at www.byui.edu/admissions/appeals. Their track assignment does not change. Students who receive this override will be required to attend the following two semesters of their regular track and may not defer either of those semesters.
New applicants will not be held to traditional deadlines if they apply
to the earliest semester available after their release. *Personal
admissions counseling is available to answer any questions these
applicants may have. All application materials must be completed
and submitted prior to an admissions decision.
Returning missionaries who do not desire to enroll in BYU–Idaho
as soon as possible will need to meet regular deadlines for the
semester in which they want to begin. Returning missionaries applying past the deadline should file out an appeal at the appeal page.
All applicants to BYU–Idaho must have completed a college
entrance examination (ACT or SAT). Those who have not
taken one of these tests may be allowed, on return, to take a
residual ACT examination on BYU–Idaho’s campus by personal
arrangement. Completion of this test and resulting scores may
still allow for admissions consideration for the earliest available
semester.
Students whose native language is not English will be required to
take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), even if
they are serving an English-speaking mission. More information on
this examination can be found at www.ets.org.
Applicants who are not United States citizens are not eligible for
early admission. U.S. law requires certain documentation and
financial information that must be submitted at certain times in the
application process. Thus, international applicants must adhere to
regular admissions deadlines.
The Returning Missionary Program will be a valuable tool for
returning missionaries to continue their academic and spiritual
development. These students will prove a great blessing to others
on campus through their leadership and examples.
* Applicants must have completed an honorable full-time missino to qualify for the Returning Missionary Program.
