Legal Documents
Once you are admitted, you must:
- Deposit USD $4,000 at BYU-Idaho. Once this amount is received, the student will be issued an I-20 form (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant F-1 Student Status).
- Read the instructions attached to the I-20 carefully. These instructions contain vital information which, when presented to the U.S. Embassy, allows for the issuance of the F-1 visa, which is required for admission to the United States.
- To apply for the F-1 Visa, you must schedule an interview with the nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy in your country for information on application requirements and processing time. (Canadians present their documents at the U.S. border.) When you go for your interview, most consulates will ask you to present the following documents:
- Form I-20 (for F-1 status).
- Receipt for SEVIS I-901 fee payment.
- Letter of admission from BYU-Idaho.
- Financial documents such as a bank statement or scholarship letters that verify you are financially able to support yourself while attending BYU-Idaho.
- Evidence of intent to return to your home country upon completion of your studies.
- Valid passport (passport must be valid at least six months from the date of application).
- Two photographs.
- An application fee (if required by the U.S. Embassy in your country).
- Check with your local U.S. Consulate or Embassy to see if any other materials will be required for F-1 Visa application.

- A new fee is now required of all F-1 visa holders to be paid before they go to the U.S. Embassy to receive their visa. Visit www.fmjfee.com for more details on how to complete the I-901 form and fee.
