Admission Tips
Before Your Senior Year:
- Get Prepared: BYU–Idaho’s Get Prepared Web site, www.byui.edu/prepare, is an excellent resource for general information about BYU–Idaho’s history, academic programs, involvement options, costs/financial information, helpful checklists, and more. ‘Get Prepared’ at www.byui.edu/prepare today!
- Develop good study habits: Studying well is the best way to keep your grades up. Simple things like paying attention in class, reading your textbooks and assignments, asking questions in class, doing your homework, using tutoring help, and getting plenty of sleep are all tried and true ways to keep your grades up, which is a big part of your college preparation.
- Take the right classes: By taking the right classes, you’ll be well prepared for the college experience. BYU–Idaho recommends (but does not require) the following type of curriculum:
- 4+ years of mathematics
- 4+ years of English or literature
- 2-3 years of laboratory science
- 2 years of history or government
- 2+ years of foreign language
- …and don’t forget the most important: 4 years of SEMINARY!
Along with this type of curriculum, Advanced Placement (AP) classes add strength to your application and may help you bypass some introductory coursework at BYU–Idaho.
- Get Involved: Involvement in clubs, sports, work experience, service, Scouting, Duty to God, Personal Progress, talent/scholastic competitions, performing groups, and more are all ways to add strength to your application. (Plus, they’ll prepare you well for the BYU–Idaho atmosphere!)
- Take the ACT or SAT: The best times to take the ACT or SAT are in the spring of your Junior year and the fall of your Senior year. Regardless of when you do it, BYU–Idaho recommends students test at least twice, since scores tend to improve the second time around. BYU–Idaho will always use the highest score received before the application deadline.
- Check on home school/charter/private school requirements: If your education has not been through the public school system, take a minute to review BYU–Idaho’s instructions for you found here.
During your Senior year:
- Take the ACT or SAT (again): If you haven’t taken one of these tests yet, do so without delay. If you have already tested once, do it again! See the previous bullet point about ACT/SATs for more information.
- Apply by the priority deadline (December 1): Students who complete their application by December 1st receive priority consideration in the admissions process. All materials must be received or postmarked by this date for priority consideration. The application becomes available in mid-October at www.besmart.com.
- Use the preparation checklists: The Preparation Checklists at www.byui.edu/prepare guide you through many helpful suggestions and requirements that will help you get prepared for BYU–Idaho. Make the checklists your personal ‘to-do’ list and you’ll be on top of the game!
