"I congratulate you most warmly on the pursuit of your educational programs. I urge you to get all of the education you can. You are moving into a terribly competitive society. The Lord would have you learn things both secular and spiritual."

Welcome to the
Department of Academic Learning
Every year at BYU-Idaho, the Academic Learning Department serves over 8,000 different students from all parts of the university's campus. These students spend an average of 12 hours per semester with individual tutors. The Academic Center is designed to supplement classroom instruction and help students practice, sharpen, and master essential college skills. Students who come to the Center begin to understand the difference one-on-one and group tutoring can make in their academic lives through their close contact with peer tutors. This one-on-one teaching and learning experience is part of the core essence of the "Spirit of Ricks."
Tutoring is free for BYU-Idaho students. The tutors and assistants in each of the Learning Centers (Reading, Writing, Math, Tutoring, and Study Skills) are trained and paid by BYU-Idaho. Because of this, all students have equal access and can be confident they will receive qualified, professional help in a relaxed atmosphere.
Each semester more than 300 students are hired to work as tutors. Great positive growth results from students helping students. This comes in the form of improved academic achievement and, often, heightened spiritual insights. The qualities of cooperation, teamwork, and leadership-as tutors and students learn how to learn from each other-are invaluable by-products from the experience in the Academic Centers.
So, whether students want to improve their academic reading skills, revise an essay, get help with a specific class, advance their study skills, or ask a math question, they can get the help they need in the Academic Learning Center. We welcome all students and are ready to serve them as they move forward to achieve their academic goals.
